Ethnically Ambiguous

From Everyday Feminism: I'm Not A Puzzle To Solve

As annoying as this is, I get this a lot, personally and professionally. My response usually is: "What do you think I am?", and make them squirm a bit. Or if I'm at work, and I get the question, "Where am I from?", I point to my name tag which clearly says SEATTLE.

There are many reasons I play this game back with them.  I need to make sure people understand that there's more to me than my ethnicity and my nationality, and those two things have two different and distinct meanings.  See me as Drew first.  Understand what I'm all about.  See past the superficial, and get to know me.

Unfortunately, there are many people around the world -- not just Americans -- that can't get past the physical appearance of others that aren't typical looks in their world/worldview. It's sad really.
